View workZurab Gikashvili is a Georgian contemporary artist whose career spans several decades, shaped by the cultural shifts of the late Soviet era and the artistic reorientation that followed Georgia’s independence. He received his formal art education within the Georgian academic system, where strong emphasis was placed on drawing, composition, and painterly discipline. This solid foundation allowed him to later move confidently beyond traditional frameworks and develop a personal, exploratory visual language. He won an art competition in 1991 and was allowed to work in the first Mediterranean atelier in Gibellina, Italy, with the artist Marcus Luperzi.
Beginning his professional activity in the final years of the Soviet period, Gikashvili belonged to a generation of artists who sought new forms of expression at a time of social and ideological transformation. He was actively involved in the Georgian art scene during the 1980s and 1990s, a period marked by experimentation, informal exhibitions, and a growing dialogue with international contemporary art. These years were crucial in defining his commitment to abstraction as a means of intellectual and emotional freedom.
Gikashvili’s artistic practice is centered on abstract and semi-abstract painting, where color, texture, and rhythm play a leading role. His works are often built through layered surfaces and dynamic brushwork, reflecting both intuitive gesture and structural awareness. Rather than illustrating specific narratives, his paintings suggest inner landscapes—states of tension, balance, and reflection—inviting the viewer into a contemplative visual experience.
The main value of Zurab Gikashvili’s work lies in its synthesis of local artistic tradition and universal modernist language. While his paintings resonate with the spirit of international abstraction, they retain a distinctly Georgian emotional depth and sensitivity. This combination gives his work both cultural specificity and broad relevance, allowing it to communicate beyond geographic boundaries.
Over the years, Zurab Gikashvili has exhibited widely in Georgia and internationally, and his works are held in private collections. His artistic significance rests on the consistency and integrity of his vision—an ongoing exploration of painting as a space of freedom, memory, and emotional truth. His work stands as a meaningful contribution to Georgian contemporary art, valued for its depth, restraint, and enduring expressive power.
