Nato Sirbiladze

Nato Sirbiladze

Living dates : 1955 - Present

Nationality : Georgian

Nato Sirbiladze is a self-taught artist who began her artistic career at the age of 31. After graduating from a pedagogical institute, she pursued a career in education, but her deep passion for art ultimately shaped her path.

She has never been part of any artistic group or school, which makes her creative process entirely independent — a journey inward, in search of personal expression and unique visual language. Accordingly, the public representation of the artist’s works is limited to a few local and international group exhibitions.

In her works, Sirbiladze explores a variety of subjects, including religious themes, landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and collages. She primarily works on paper using gouache and watercolor techniques.

Her artistic voice often stands in dissonance with conventional norms of visual expression. For Nato, painting is an act of exploration — through observation, reflection, and dialogue with a “deep memory,” where complexity hides in simplicity. The naïve visual narrative, the purity of colors, and her unfiltered expressiveness lend her works the distinct lightness and sincerity. It’s for this reason she is often compared to one of the greatest Georgian (naïve) painters, Niko Pirosmani — both artists find the depth of the world in its simplest forms.

In addition, her multilayered practice, expressed through diverse forms, pastel tones, and striking contrasts of light and shadow, invites viewers into diverse personal interpretations and deep emotional engagement.
