Giorgi Makharashvili "Makhar"

Living dates : 1988 - Present

Nationality : Georgian

Giorgi Makharashvili is a Georgian painter and lecturer whose art delves into the unseen worlds within the human spirit. Born and based in Tbilisi, he graduated from the A. Kutateladze Tbilisi State Art Academy with both a Bachelor’s degree in Decorative Arts and a Master’s degree in Fine Art. Since 2011, he has served as a lecturer in drawing at the Academy, sharing his mastery of composition, light and shadow, and spatial perception with the next generation of artists. His career has taken him beyond Georgia’s borders, with exhibitions in Germany, the Netherlands, Ukraine, and Iran, earning him recognition for his ability to merge philosophical depth with technical precision.

Makharashvili’s work is grounded in the belief that each human being is a constantly evolving landscape of inner layers and transformations. His paintings express deep mystical connections between human beings and their invisible inner universes—spaces where emotion, memory, and spirit intersect. Using primarily oil on canvas or cardboard, he combines classical and modern approaches with subtle elements of impressionism, experimenting with textures and materials to serve the emotional needs of each piece. His symbolic figures, spiritual archetypes, and dreamlike scenes embody the silent processes of change, resilience, and self-discovery.

Across his personal and group exhibitions, Giorgi has explored themes of metamorphosis and mystical infinity. One of his most outstanding works, Vaja, distills the essence of his vision—an intimate dialogue between the visible self and its unseen spiritual depths. Through fluid forms and a dreamlike atmosphere, the painting invites the viewer to step across the boundary into their own inner universe. Works such as The Highest Priestess, and You Are the Vineyard invite viewers to pause and immerse themselves in a contemplative space where the boundaries between the physical and spiritual dissolve.

For Makharashvili, art is not only a form of expression but a means of mapping the invisible—capturing the unspoken moments when identity shifts, when silence speaks, and when the future emerges from the shadow of the past. His work is both deeply personal and universally resonant, offering an invitation to explore the mysteries that lie just beyond perception. Through his teaching, he passes on this vision, encouraging young artists to see beyond the surface and create works that breathe with their own inner life.
